My Best Friend

Image
"A sister is someone that is not only your sister but a best friend." That is what Julie, my sister, and I always say because we are truly best friends. We do everything together. We are only 17 months apart in age. My mom would always dress us in the same outfit when we were little and everyone would always ask if we were twins. Julie is someone that I always want by my side, which has made it hard and extremely different since I have moved into college. We have made so many memories together and get along so well. My sister makes the harder times easier and the easy times more fun. We tell each other everything and would always make time in the day too caught up and just talk to each other. Most of the time those conversations would happen at night while everyone is sleeping. Either one of us would go into the other's bedroom and sit on whoever's bed. We would always end up laughing too loud or making a lot of noise and would wake my mom up. She would always come in...

The Star Player of the Family

Image
Pamela Girvin: My grandma and my idol in life. She is the most crucial person to my character in life. I learned how to be a good person and how to treat everyone with respect from her. Every year we go on a beach trip with the whole family. Each of the 4 grandkids is allowed to take 2 of our friends with us. "Do any of your friends want me to make their favorite meals or do they need any spending money for while we are down here?" my grandma pleaded, seemingly begging for us to accept her offers. "While you guys are under my supervision, you are all family to me. I will take care of you." she said to my friends.  That was just how my grandma acted around everyone. She believed that everyone deserved the same love and attention. She showed that with her warm hugs and gleaming smile. Every morning we woke up bright and early to the sweet smell of chocolate chip pancakes and the savory scent of bacon. She always prepared enough food for a small army. Although she was ...

The Coach Up Above Playing a sport has many components that come along with it. Starting with the coaches, without having that set mentor you have nothing. Coaches put all their time and efforts to bring the team together. From practices, to team bonding, and then to games, they are the ones who make it all happen.  Taking it back to the start of Junior High, this was the first year you were eligible to play a sport for the school. I walked into our elementary gym with hard floors and tiny bleachers not knowing anyone or even how to hold a field hockey stick. The clock on the wall was broken so there was no telling how much longer you had. Little did I know, this would soon end up being my entire life and I would never wish away the time. We had two coaches, Coach Ellen and Coach Amy. Amy was the mom of the group whereas Ellen was more structured and in it for the game. Ellen was our head coach and is now the person who I look up to for close to everything. Ellen had this love for ...

The Growth from Exploration

Image
Ayden Snowboarding in Vermont The choice of attempting Covid School or taking a gap year was an easy one for Ayden. He knew right away that he  wasn't going to thrive in online college. Instead, he decided to explore and grow by being independent and moving away from home. Throughout the winter he moved up to Vermont and worked at a ski resort. He roomed with a friend from home but met so many people from all over the country. He learned about different peoples lifestyles, and jobs they have pursued. He left as the 19 year old Ayden we knew and returned with a whole knew maturity and understanding of himself and others. The growth that he was able to obtain in such a short period of time was immaculate. During our conversations about his experience in Vermont he would claim, "There's really so much more to learn about the people and places around you that you just can't find unless you go explore." It has stuck with me because I have seen all that he has experienc...

"The Art of Teaching" Significant Person Blog - Garrett

Image
Mr. Joel Ryder works at Warrior Run High School as the art teacher. He's a quiet, wise, well of creativity, who constantly inspires his students. In his two part segmented room, he teaches a wide range of techniques from oil painting, to charcoal drawings, to pottery. In his free time, he continues his passion by teaching pottery after school at his own art studio. Centered Earth      Mr. Ryder himself is about a middle aged man who stands with a tall, heavy set stature. Grey streaks decorate his beard and nearly bald head. He alternates between a collared shirt and khakis, and t-shirts and shorts depending on how ruined his cloths would get from the medium he would be working in for that day.      The room he teaches in is split into two rooms with a segment of the adjacent wall missing to allow students to walk from one room to the other. The walls are decorated with art from previous students, and there is rarely...

Hard Work Pays Off

Image
Family trip in 2016  " You can accomplish anything If you work hard enough" exclaimed Scott Lewis. Although he is not my biological father, he is the man who raised me. Throughout his 56 year long life, he has always put in hard work to get where he is today. Growing up the the rural town of Butler, Pennsylvania wasn't always easy peasy for him. Scott starts telling a childhood story, " I remember my first job, I was just 12 years old. Grandma and grandpa could only afford to buy the three of us one pair of pants and three t-shirts each for the new school year. I really wanted these new fancy shoes that came out. Since there was no extra money, I was forced to go out and asked around town if anyone was willing to hire me. Eventually I came upon the local newspaper. I walked into the small white building with no job and came out with a perfect fitting job. My morning paper route started at 6am every single morning. I would take my bike on the paper route and then rid...

A Grandma's Love is Always and Forever. Left to Right: Danielle, Me and Mommom Have you ever lost someone who meant so much to you, you didn't know how to feel? Well on Friday, November 29th, 2013, Deitra Ann Edwards, my grandmother and the person who impacted my life the most died. Although I lived with my parents in Northeast Philadelphia, I spent the majority of my childhood at my grandparents’ house in East Germantown due to the busy schedule my parents had. My grandmother was the type of person who didn't take just anything from anybody. She always told us "I lived 60+ years here, I'm pretty sure I earned the right to say whatever I want!" My grandmother is my role model because she helped me develop my passion for cooking and baking, my interest in criminal justice and my love for art ultimately helping me become the person I am today.  Mommom and I mixing her famous butter cake.  I loved going to my grandmother’s house. The second I stepped inside the d...

More Than Just My Mom

Image
(Going out with my Mom)    They say the love between a mother and daughter knows no distance. My mom and I both believe this is true. I don't know what I would do without this woman. I struggle with not being able to see her every day since moving to college. Her laugh is contagious, as she's usually laughing at me or something funny I said. Sometimes we are laughing at the funny pictures we take on Snapchat with the weird filters! Once we start, it's like we can't stop. My brother and dad would walk out of their rooms just to see what we're laughing at. They always say, "What now?" They're used to us just having full-on laughing sessions at this point. They're  also used to us spending money. We love to go out and shop at the malls or the outlet stores! We loved shopping for all my college stuff together. That's my favorite time with her, even if we are running to the grocery store together. There's never a dull moment with us! She is the ...

The Bearer of My Life

Image
From the time she became a parent, she knew she was determined to give her kids the best life possible. My mother is a short woman, around 5'4, with brown eyes and wavy brown hair. Often times, she dresses very professionally as she is always working. My mother, started as a nurse who worked in the E.R of hospital, then worked her way up in positions until she got to where she works now, in risk management.  She can often be found working at her desk or working on projects around the house. The reason she is always such a hard worker is to provide for her family. As a single mother, she is constantly working to ensure the bills are paid and the house is comfortable for her children. She revolves her life around her children and never want to see them disappointed. Always filled with determination to do the best work possible.  My mother's cluttered desk      "When you do something, make sure it is done right the first time!" is a common phras...

Just a pair of Joker's          "Any man can be a father, but it takes someone special to be a dad." These words spoken by Anne Geddes, take the words right out of my mouth.   It turns out a father can be more than your regular parent. He can also be a bestfriend. My Dad is one of a kind. If I was a guy, I think I’d be a mini walking version of him. Not only personality wise, but physical looks too. He is blonde, blue eyed, and maybe stands only about 5'8 like me except I'm only 5'5.  He is humorous, goofy, and loving but also knows when to be serious and knows how to give advice to me when its needed. I would not be the person I am today if it were not for the wise words, stupid jokes, and love that I receive from my dad everyday.  High school graduation     My father, Stephen Kaminski, is a technician and works with the company "Superior Plus". He fixes individuals house problems like heating and air conditioning along w...

Do it all artist

Image
My brother, Brandon Snyder, a tall man hunched over from always working. He is very meticulous. If you would ever move something in his house he would have to move it right back the way it was. He has short hair with a long, curly beard. He trims his beard with tiny scissors  because he wants it to look good. No matter what someone says about it he would never cut it off. You can tell he is untroubled by what people think of him.  An example of this  Brandon and his dog doc is when I walked around the corner at graduation, the lights were blinding.  I looked out to the sea of people. The fair sized auditorium was packed.  I tried looking over to where my brother was sitting, while shaking the hands of the administration. He was easy to spot in the crowed because of his long clean beard.  I could see him smiling from ear to ear. Once done shaking hands I turned my back to head back to my seat. My family started to clap. All of a s...

Girl on the spectrum

Image
As I walked through the hall of my aunts house I noticed something strange. My cousin Maguire's  brand new adidas socks were inside out. I proceeded to wonder why in the world the socks we bought at the store two hours ago would be inside out? I looked at her with a puzzled look, "Maggy, we just got those socks, why are you not wearing them correctly?'' She paused for a moment, then said "the inseam at the toes of the sock irritate me." I looked at her with no hesitation and responded with "Oh, I understand. Maybe I will start doing that." In that very moment she had never felt more accepted for a choice she made regarding her sensory issues. Her dark brown eyes started to glow and her face became brighter as she smiled at me. The glow in her eyes has stuck with me since that day. I had made my older cousin feel as though she could always trust me. The natural high I received off the look she gave me has stuck since then. Being able to be th...

Little did he know

Image
"No matter what, no matter where, I'll always be there when you need me the most!" These words spoken not by someone famous but just Ty. A man not know by many but such words never meant so much to me till a cold winters' day. "The winters day setting"      The roads were covered in a blanket of white. No way to get in or out but somehow; he did! It was a day to have fun and maybe build a snowman or two but for us it was just a phone call. I wasn't doing the best mentally and I could feel from his calm and soothing voice he just wanted to make me feel just a little bit better. He said, "remember that time when I told you I'd do anything to make you smile?" I answered in a sigh, "Yes, I remember." Shortly after I heard, "Knock, Knock" on the door. I sighed and drugged my feet across the cold wooden floor. As I opened the door I hear, "SURPRISE!" I open the door to a bundled-up eskimo with the sweetest grin...

Always Looking Out

Image
My older brother, a tall brunette with 15 years on me, has looked out for me like no one else. As a dual board certified physician, his experience in the field of medicine and schooling is unmatched. Nathan during his senior year at Bucknell   "Yeah it sucks" was his famous phrase at family gatherings. As a   child psychiatrist, Nate's days are long, hard, and taxing. He has been   an attending for three years now, currently employed at an outpatient   clinic in Pennsylvania. Although he makes a good earning, he   persuades people away from the profession in an effort to save them   from the horror he experienced.    He began his journey as a graduate of Bloomsburg High School,   from there he majored in biochemistry at Bucknell University. After   the completion of his undergrad he moved to the city of Philadelphia   in order to pursue his acceptance to Jefferson Medical College.  ...

My Teacher My Inspiration

Image
My Teacher My Inspiration           Walking into high school as a freshman, I feared what my teachers were going to be like. Are they going to be mean and ruthless or easygoing and helpful? Throughout freshman, sophomore, and junior year I was never scared to start a new class. That was until senior year in my Health Occupations 3 class which taught skills and knowledge of health care workers. On the first day of class, as I walked into the room, I saw a short, younger lady in the proper dress attire of a nurse. Her hair was pulled up, her stethoscope was around her neck, and she was in what seemed to be a good mood. As the rest of the class flowed in, it got quieter and quieter. Me taking Health Occupations 1 and 2, I was never worried about the next class that followed. Mrs. Grieb, the class's new teacher, stood up out of her chair and began to say with a serious tone in her voice, "This class will be taken seriously. So,...
