The Bearer of My Life

From the time she became a parent, she knew she was determined to give her kids the best life possible. My mother is a short woman, around 5'4, with brown eyes and wavy brown hair. Often times, she dresses very professionally as she is always working. My mother, started as a nurse who worked in the E.R of hospital, then worked her way up in positions until she got to where she works now, in risk management.  She can often be found working at her desk or working on projects around the house. The reason she is always such a hard worker is to provide for her family. As a single mother, she is constantly working to ensure the bills are paid and the house is comfortable for her children. She revolves her life around her children and never want to see them disappointed. Always filled with determination to do the best work possible.

My mother's cluttered desk

"When you do something, make sure it is done right the first time!" is a common phrase my mother will say. Whenever watching or assisting my sister and I in a job or activity, she preaches this rule to us.

She does a very good job at leading by example and often tells my sister and I to do so. "Joshua, come here." my mother said while sitting at her desk, hard at work.

"Alright, I'm coming" I said in a slightly irritated tone as I was busy myself working on assignments.

"I just wanted to show you this." my mother said in a happy voice. "You know how I always say when your doing something, make sure you do it right the first time right?"

"Noo not at all, not like that's one of your catchphrases." I said in a sarcastic tone.

Ignoring my sarcasm, my mother continued speaking. "Take a look at this email." she said.

The email contained a message from her boss and her bosses boss. The E-mail was a very positive one, essentially saying that her hard work was being noticed and asked if she would like to have a small promotion and run a program within her job.

"See mijo" (meaning son in Spanish) my mother said. "Working hard and doing things the right way pays off"

My mother hard at work at her desk

Being a diligent, and caring person, my mother does everything in her power to make sure her children have everything they could want and need. She knows that the little things are what make my sister and I happy. One evening, while still hard at work at her desk, my mother was thinking of something she could do to make the weekend start off right. With the light of her computer screen glistening on her brown eyes, my mother asked my sister and I, "What would you guys like for dinner tonight?" in a soft, kind tone. She spoke slowly as she often does. My sister and I agreed on ordering from Dominoes which we had told our mother. She was still working the last part of her usual 8 hour shift. "I still have 30 minutes left on my shift, then we can go order and pick up the food." my mother said, again in a soft, kind voice. Regardless of Dominoes not being her favorite place to get food from, she knew it would make my sister and I happy. She was dressed professionally in Khakis and a  nice dress shirt as she has zoom meetings with other professionals from the hospital. Once her shift was officially over, she asked, "You guys ready?" in an upbeat tone, happy to be done with work and spend time with her children.

Excited for dinner, my sister and I eagerly replied saying "Yup!". After this, we all got into the car and enjoyed our Friday evening, happy with the pizza and other food that we ordered.

Other than not being able to be here today without my mother, I wouldn't be at the point in life I am without her. She sets a great example and is the biggest supporter I could have. From allowing me to stay  at home for college and helping me save money, to providing everything I need such as food with no charge, nobody has been there for me the way she has. She has made, and continues to make the biggest impact on my life of anybody, and I cannot thank her enough.
