More Than Just My Mom

(Going out with my Mom)
They say the love between a mother and daughter knows no distance. My mom and I both believe this is true. I don't know what I would do without this woman. I struggle with not being able to see her every day since moving to college. Her laugh is contagious, as she's usually laughing at me or something funny I said. Sometimes we are laughing at the funny pictures we take on Snapchat with the weird filters! Once we start, it's like we can't stop. My brother and dad would walk out of their rooms just to see what we're laughing at. They always say, "What now?" They're used to us just having full-on laughing sessions at this point. They're  also used to us spending money. We love to go out and shop at the malls or the outlet stores! We loved shopping for all my college stuff together. That's my favorite time with her, even if we are running to the grocery store together. There's never a dull moment with us! She is the true definition of a best friend. Another great thing about her is that she knows everything. Just like in the Disney movie "Tangled", when Rapunzel's mom is singing "Mother Knows Best," she's not wrong. They do!

(Picture after a softball game)
She is my #1 Fan. Growing up, I played lots of sports, softball, basketball, and volleyball too! My dad worked a lot, but he would always be there when he could make it. He was even the bookkeeper for my softball team! But my mom was always there on the sidelines cheering for me! "You got this, Bella!" she would yell and clap! Whether she was in her softball Vikings t-shirt and baseball cap, or  it was the vikings Basketball t-shirt! "You did great, Bell!" she would say after every game, even if I sucked, which by the way, I did at basketball! The alarm was set for 7:00 am on game days. Guess who gets up with me? Yup. My mom! I'm sitting on the uncomfortable stool in my kitchen with my hairbrush, spray bottle, and two hair ties! She stands behind me and starts parting my hair in half so she can do two braids because I never liked only one. Halfway through, she would lose the braid because of her carpal tunnel, which would make her have to restart, but she would still do it!

She's my biggest supporter! Even when she wasn't feeling well, she made sure it we knew she was there! She suffers from rare diseases. One being MALS.  It stands for Mediate Arcuate Ligament Syndrome.  It's when a ligament is compressing her celiac artery. This has affected her a lot and it isn't a good thing because the celiac artery is a significant branch of the aorta that delivers blood to the stomach, liver, and other organs! She's seen tons of doctors and has undergone many surgeries. Even though she has gone through all this, she still showed up for me! She would cook breakfast, lunch, and dinner for us, no complaints!

She's also the only person I know that can make you feel better with just her presence. She doesn't even have to do anything. She's like an angel. On the night of May 11th, 2021, I was sitting on one couch while my mom was across from me on the other. I was snuggled up with my Shih Tzu Poodle mix Sophie. I was antagonizing her when I shouldn't have and, I pushed it too far. She snapped. She got a hold of my upper lip. I could see stars thinking I would faint from the loss of blood gushing out of my lip. I got up, holding my lip because I could feel it hanging by a thread on the right side.  My dad and brother rushed over to help my mom. My mom threw the blanket off of her and jumped up. She was in her favorite black crewneck sweatshirt that said MALS and black sweatpants. "Why did you have to do that?" she kept saying as she ran to grab paper towels from the kitchen. She immediately held onto my lip to try and control the bleeding.

"I'm sorry! I'm sorry!" is all I kept trying to say, but it was too hard with her hand on the paper towel holding my lip in place. She comforted me and just kept saying.

"Shh, it's gonna be alright." The whole time she did not panic. She instructed my dad to call 911 as soon as she saw what it looked like. Once EMTs arrived, she kept telling me it would all be okay, and she and my dad would be right behind the ambulance. When I got into the ambulance, it didn't feel like it was hanging as much anymore. I believe my mom had put my lip back together. I ended up with five stitches on the left side of my lip. On the right side, I was left with only a small scratch and bruising. If it wasn't for my mom being there that night, my lip might not look how it does today.  She is my person, just like Cristina is to Meredith in the tv show "Grey's Anatomy". I don't know what I would do without her, the best mom!

If you can't tell by now, my mom is there for me every step of the way! Like I said before, this is the first time I'm away from her, and man, it's really hard! I miss her like crazy every day! I live two and half hours away from school back in New Jersey! The car ride up, I needed two cars to get all my stuff up here. I drove up in her car and we both cried the whole way here!

"Am I doing the right thing?" I kept asking her.

She said to me, "Bella, you're gonna do great things and I am so so proud of you!"

This one sentence is what's helping me to get through college every single day! I know everyone in my family is so proud of me right now. But when your mom and dad say it to you, it means 10x more.

Comments

  1. in the first paragraph when you are talking about the pictures you take on Snapchat, I would remove the haha, I feel like it doesn't work in a writing. whether is the second paragraph is spelt wrong. The rest is really good and your anecdote was written good and had good detailing.
