Hard Work Pays Off

Family trip in 2016

" You can accomplish anything If you work hard enough" exclaimed Scott Lewis. Although he is not my biological father, he is the man who raised me. Throughout his 56 year long life, he has always put in hard work to get where he is today. Growing up the the rural town of Butler, Pennsylvania wasn't always easy peasy for him.

Scott starts telling a childhood story, " I remember my first job, I was just 12 years old. Grandma and grandpa could only afford to buy the three of us one pair of pants and three t-shirts each for the new school year. I really wanted these new fancy shoes that came out. Since there was no extra money, I was forced to go out and asked around town if anyone was willing to hire me. Eventually I came upon the local newspaper. I walked into the small white building with no job and came out with a perfect fitting job. My morning paper route started at 6am every single morning. I would take my bike on the paper route and then ride over to school. That job lasted me the next three years."

After graduating at Penn State, Scott has worked as a salesman at a couple different companies. Starting at a small tool company, migrating into a tobacco company, and ending up at another tool company. For all of my life I remember him coming home in blue jeans or khakis and a blue or gray collared shirt with the companies name written on it, MSC Industrial Supplies. Always carrying an iPad and folders filled to the brim with papers. Always working before and after dinner inputting sale quotes and attending tedious meetings. All of that effort allowed him to make top 5 salesmen for almost 7 years.

I asked him how he was able to achieve the highest recognition as a salesmen in his company. He replies with " I am by far not the smartest person there but I made to most connections and put in the time. Not everyone is born smart. Being smart is overrated! It doesn't always get you where you want to be, but putting in the legwork will."

" It took me five years to graduate from my four year bachelor's degree. I was paying for my own college without any help from grandpa and grandma. Working during the summers and breaks wasn't enough to pay for tuition and just everyday living. I had to take a break between my sophomore and junior to work up more money. I worked at the local landscaping store during all of college. It wasn't ideal but something I had to do." After seeing and hearing Scott's success, I will take his advice with me throughout my life. Being smart is a blessing but doesn't guarantee anything. Your vigor and time is what will make you successful in life.

  1. in between butler and Pennsylvania just add a comma. with the 3rd paragraph I would just make the job where he started, went to and ended one sentence and not little ones cut up really short.
